The first series of Monster in My Pocket was released in 1990. The figures initially came in 4 colors: Red, Olive Green, Yellow, and Purple. Each monster was released in multiple colors (but many were not made in all 4 colors). The monsters each had their own point value ranging from 5 to 25 points, with higher points meaning more powerful monsters. The points were to be used for a War style Monster in My Pocket game. But most people just collected the figures because they were cool, rather than playing the game. The Red and Yellow Kali and Catoblepas were only released with the Monster Clash game.
The series was later released in neon colors (hot new colors!) and this is where the series gets tricky. There were 4 neon colors that were all brighter versions of the base colors: Neon Red, Neon Yellow, Neon Green and Neon Purple (aka Thistle). Unlike the base colors, every monster was released in all 4 colors. But certain colors were only released in certain countries (France and Africa were the primary beneficiaries). These figures generally are harder to find, though they don't always sell for more.
In addition to the Neon and Base colors, there were also Premiums released in several other colors including Pine Green, Cyan, Pink, Light Orange, Series 2 Neon Green, and Glow in the Dark. These were released with various memorabilia including battle cards, the board game, 24 Packs, and a New Jersey Arcade. The Arcade monsters are considered the rarest of the promotional figures.

Star Monster Jotun Troll
On the back of the Secret 12 packs it mentioned a special monster with a star for a point value. The Prima Checklist actually just showed a Jotun Troll with a star. It took many years but several Star Trolls have been found. So far they have been found in Purple and Neon Red. It is unknown how many exist.
Also there was a fake troll sold for big bucks several years ago (See the last picture below)
Thanks to Little Weirdos for pics of the Purple Star Troll and comparison pics.

1: Great Beast - An awesome, very powerful monster with many poisonous heads and wings.
Point Value: 25
Available Colors: P, G, NP, NR, NP, NY, Pine, Blue
Matchbox Trading Card Text:
Species: Giant Reptilian Serpent
Born: Arose from the sea over 2000 years ago
Size: 200 Feet Tall

The Great Beast literally stands heads and shoulders above all other monsters. At over 200 feet tall and weighing an estimated 20 tons (that's 40,000 pounds!), he represents the most awesome and powerful of all creatures. This cold-blooded killer is easily distinguished by his seven horny heads - each controlling one of the seven seas. From his headquarters in a remote jungle, he has the ability to create floods and raise tides throughout the world. If you should ever find yourself face to face with this slithering, slimy creature, offer yourself to the most "handsome" head. For the Great Beast also has seven great egos and this will cause the monster to fight itself, and you can quietly (and quickly) escape!

2: Hydra - Greek; a flying serpent. When it loses 1 head, 2 more grow in its place.
Point Value: 25
Available Colors: G, P, Y, NR, NP, NY, NG, Pine, Orange
Matchbox Trading Card Text:
Species: Giant Water Serpent
Born: 3000 years ago in Greece

The multi-headed Hydra is one of the most invincible monsters of all times. This flying fiend has nine - count 'em - nine dragonlike heads. If one is cut off, two heads will grow in its place. And Hydra's breath is so deadly it makes the Los Angeles smog seem refreshing! A quick huff and a puff by this monster will do more than blow your house down. He can poison waters and turn lush-green fields brown. Point Value: 25
Available Colors: R, G, NP, NG, NY, NR, Pink, Orange
Matchbox Trading Card Text:
Species: Humanoid/Animal
Born: Descended from Indo-European warriors during ancient times.
Size: 6 Feet Tall
Habitat: Cities and dark forests throughout the world
The Werewolf combines the intelligence of a human with the strength and cunning of a deadly wolf. When exposed to a full moon, he is secretly transformed into a blood-thirsty, growling beast who possesses a craving for human flesh. The only known method of killing the werewolf is with a silver bullet. So, if there's a full moon out tonight, listen carefully to that distant howl... another victim perhaps?

Available Colors: R, P, NP, NG, NY, NR, Pine, Blue
Matchbox Trading Card Text:
Species: Giant herbivore
Born: Between the I and the XII century A.C.
Habitat: African desert
Called the "King of the Animals" the Behemoth resembles a gigantic overweight hippopotamus. He represents the ultimate couch potato with an appetite that literally won't quit! When this guy gets the munchies, he can wipe out an entire grocery store in one sitting. When he is thirsty, he is known to swallow the contents of a lake in a single big gulp. The Behemoth's eating binges have been responsible for creating devastating droughts and famines throughout the world. Although this monster won't eat people (he's a devout vegetarian), he possesses unbelievable strength and can crush an entire army by simply rolling over. Point Value: 25
Available Colors: G, P, NG, NY, NP, NR, Blue, Pine
Matchbox Trading Card Text:
Species: Animal / Bird
Born: 5000 years ago in Middle East
Habitat: European and Asian mountains
A distant relative of the Chimera [#30] and the Harpy [#21], the Griffin is a gigantic flying beast which is part lion and part eagle. These powerful creatures have huge appetites and are especially fond of horses. They are also known to fly over nearby villages and capture unsuspecting people, to be taken back to their nest and fed to the baby Griffins - who prefer these bite sized humans! So next time the shadow of a dark "cloud" appears overhead, take caution that it's not a Griffin out on a shopping trip!

6: Tyrannosaurus Rex - The king of the dinosaurs
Point Value: 25
Available Colors: G, P, NP, NG, NR, NY, Pine, Orange
Matchbox Trading Card Text:
Species: Dinosaur
Born: During Prehistoric Mesozoic Era
Habitat: Remote islands in the Caribbean
Tyrannosaurus Rex or "T.Rex" as his friends call him is the king of the dinosaurs. He lived in the prehistoric times and was thought to be just another old fossil until he was reawakened by a violent earthquake on his remote Caribbean island. Rising from the ocean he uses his gigantic stubby legs to kick over anything that gets in his way, and his enormous "whale tail" can clear an entire acre of land with one wag. Taller than most buildings, this amphibious creature doesn't mess with eating people, he eats whole cities (and usually a suburb for dessert)! It's no wonder this entire species became extinct millions of years ago, they probably couldn't find anyone to play with.

The gaze of a Cockatrice has the power to split rocks. And one look into the eyes of this monster will bring certain death! Available Colors: R, Y, NP, NR, NG, NY, Orange, Pink
Matchbox Trading Card Text:
Species: Sea Serpent
Size: 1 mile wide
Born: First sighted in 1555
Habitat: Lives in the deepest, darkest oceans
Perhaps the most awesome sea monster ever, Kraken is actually bigger than Yankee Stadium! When seen from the distance, Kraken appears to be a deserted island sitting in the middle of the ocean. However, if you approach this "island" you will be met with a pair of great glassy eyes and a set of sharp teeth - so large they are often mistaken for icebergs! When this guy's hungry he will feast on a large ship. Using his long tentacles to pluck men from the deck, Kraken will swallow these tasty morsels as an appetizer. Then the powerful monster will wrap his eight arms completely around the ship, pulling it to the depths of the sea and eating the remaining crew for his main course. The evil Jotun Troll is no doll! He is the son of the Norse God of Frost and although he is only 4 feet tall, he's fairly easy to pick out in a crowd - he has eight heads! This monster has the magical ability to create blizzards and avalanches to bury his enemies. Although he is surprisingly powerful for such a small creature, this bearded wonder is really known for his skills using clubs and spears. The Jotun Troll is also much more intelligent than the giant trolls. (If you thought that two heads were better than one - just imagine having eight!) Although he is surprisingly powerful for such a small creature, this bearded wonder is really known for his skills using clubs and spears. The Jotun Troll is also much more intelligent than the giant trolls. (If you thought that two heads were better than one - just imagine having eight!) Nicknamed the "Talking Heads" you have probably guessed that this guy's secret weapon is his ability to talk you to death!

Point Value: 15

Matchbox Trading Card Text:
Species: Reanimated Corpse
Created: At Geneva in 1818
Habitat: He lives in europeans towns
In 1818, a young chemist named Victor Frankenstein attempted to build a 'perfect' human using parts from dead bodies. Unfortunately, his final creation was far from perfect - the monster received the brain of a murderer by mistake, making him very violent. He was quite ugly, couldn't talk, and had bad manners to boot! A bolt of lightning brought this monster to life, giving him superhuman strength. He had a hard time making friends and was often chased and stoned by the villagers. When Victor refused to build him a girlfriend, he became angry, killed several people and left to lead a life alone in the Arctic wastelands. This is definitely a moody guy!

What do you feed a monster that is 12 feet long, has the body of the lion, the tail of a scorpion, and the head of a human with three rows of sharp teeth? Anything he wants of course! The ferocious, man-eating Manticore has powerful blue eyes and the voice of a trumpet, but don't expect to see him at your next rock concert. This "low life" lives deep beneath the desert, close to the center of the earth. The Manticore runs as swiftly as the deer, has the ability to leap over small buildings. Although he's the perfect pet for Medusa [#26], you probably wouldn't want this monster sleeping under your bed at night. Catoblepas has the wings of a dragon, the body of a buffalo, and the head of a wild hog. He not only can't fly, but drags his stomach through the mud as he lazily waddles across the ground. A Zombie is a dead person that has been brought back to life by a "Hounan" (or wicked sorcerer) through the magic of voodoo. Species: Deceased spirit
Size: Can assume any size
Habitat: Old houses where evil deeds once happened
Forget everything you've seen about that friendly ghost in the cartoons! This spooky monster represents the spirit of a deceased being who either met a violent death or was not buried properly. Ghosts are nearly invisible as they roam the night - moaning and groaning, shaking beds, rattling chains, and often scaring their victims to death (a fate worse than being slimed)! These creatures often wear sheets to be seen. They glow in the dark and have deep set hollow holes for eyes. Don't bother to lock your door - they can walk through walls! So if you see a ghost quickly turn on a light. This will scare him, and may even send him away to where his friends live - in a ghost town near Lake Eerie!

Matchbox Trading Card Text:
Species: Giant Bird
Born: The Middle East in 700 AD
Size: 80 foot wingspan
Habitat: Great Island of Madagascar off the coast of Eastern Africa
At about the same size as a passenger airplane, the Roc is the largest of the flying monsters. It preys on elephants, taking them from the jungles (and zoos) and carrying them off to the mountains where they are fed to their young (the "Roc-ettes"). The eggs of the Roc are huge and highly prized. When eaten these eggs will magically restore youth to the elderly. However, the Roc is very protective of her nest eggs, and will viciously attack any intruding armies or ships, dropping huge boulders, like bombs from the sky. Some Rocs can be tamed with music, and even ridden like a flying horse. Their favorite music?..."Roc" and roll. of course!

Point Value: 10
Available Colors: R, P, G, Y, NR, NG, NP, NY
Matchbox Trading Card Text:
Species: Fairy
Born: England during World War I
Size: 20 inches tall
Habitat: Underground, near airports throughout the world
Surprisingly enough, these impish monsters are responsible for many of the great technological developments earlier in the century. However, since they never received any credit for this, they have dedicated themselves to making people's lives miserable - especially airplane pilots. Gremlins love to fly, but since they have no wings they will sneak aboard airplanes and create mischief. This includes changing the plane's direction, breaking the radio, causing turbulence, overbooking flights, and drinking the fuel. (They are so fond of gasoline, they are known to vacation at major oil spills!) So next time you're aboard an airplane and it starts to get a little bumpy - make sure you are sitting in the "No Gremlin" section!

The Vampiress is a striking creature with her red eyes, matching dress and long sharp fingernails, which are also red - painted from her victim's blood. Species: Reanimated human
Born: Thousand of years ago in the Arabian deserts.

Habitat: Lives in lonely places in and around graveyards.
One of the more gruesome monsters, the Ghoul is somewhat of a cross between a Vampire [#33] and a Ghost [#31]. These pale, glassy-eyed creatures hang around in cemeteries, robbing graves at night and feasting on the dead bodies (the fresher - the better)! Ghouls have been known to also eat the living when no corpses can be found, and are especially fond of children. They are very sneaky and have the ability to become invisible when they stand still. Fortunately, because of this unique diet of cold cuts, you can smell their breath a mile away! He got the hint, bought a mask, and left home to pursue a career in show business. He ended up living in the dark caverns beneath the grand old Paris Opera House, where years of isolation and rejection (not to mention all the opera solos) he was finally driven insane. Reborn: 1921
Size: 6 feet tall

Wrapped in tattered rags, the Mummy was buried alive in Egypt over 3700 years ago. His airtight coffin was later discovered by archaeologists who failed to heed the "do not disturb" sign...a fatal mistake! This powerful monster brutally strangled these intruders, and now roams the countryside in search of those who buried him thousands of years ago. The Mummy is known to place a deadly curse on anyone who tries to stop him. This bandaged beast cannot be destroyed by guns, knives or even slime! Having the characteristics of a "giant oily rag" the Mummy can be stopped by fire, but will one day rise from the ashes to resume his search for his enemies.

Species: Humanoid

This monster brings new meaning to the words "mass transit." He ferries the souls of the dead across the River Styx to the Underworld. Charon is perfect for this job - he's a grotesque, dirty old man, with bright red eyes and a bad attitude, and rates a big zero on the personality scale. He collects one obolus or coin (equivalent to about eight weeks allowance) from each passenger. Those who don't pay are tossed out of the boat and left to haunt the living [see Ghost #31]. Matchbox Trading Card Text:
Species: Deceased Humanoid
Died: 1898
Size: 6 Feet Tall
Habitat: In the closets of old abandoned houses
Although he died nearly 100 years ago, the Skeleton still lives on today. Tired of being used as worm food, this beastly bag of bones arose from the ground to menace the ancestors of those who put him to death. The Skeleton's bones are magically joined together with no muscles or skin. He possesses great speed and will not hesitate to pull off one of his arms or legs and use it as a club to attack his enemies. As you can see, this bonehead is not exactly a spineless wimp, (for then he'd be called chicken bones)! He's powerful and scary. You'd better hope he doesn't come shake, rattle, and rolling after you!

48 Hunchback - A horribly disfigured man that lives in towers and dumps hot melted lead on his victims.
Point Value: 5
Available Colors: R, P, G, Y, NR, NG, NP, NY, Pine:
Matchbox Trading Card Text:
Species: Humanoid
Born: 1463 in France
Size: 5 feet tall
Habitat: In the bell towers of French cathedrals
Born with one leg shorter than the other and one eye swollen shut, Hunchback was cruelly abandoned in a church by his parents and raised by a priest. Unfortunately, he grew uglier with age - a large wart appeared over his good eye, his uneven teeth grew over his lip, and as a result of not sitting up straight at the dinner table, he developed his trademark hunchback. He later became deaf from ringing the bells in the cathedral. Not a terribly popular fellow, he was befriended by a Gypsy dancer. Sadly she was later executed for a crime she didn't commit. Hunchback murdered her accusers and retreated to the bell tower where he pours hot lead on top of anyone who approaches. (His younger brother turned out to be a great football player - the halfback of Notre Dame!)
